based on the Holy Bible:
"Correctional education formed as early as the 1800s, with prison chaplains considered the first “teachers,” as they used the Bible (often the only book allowed in early prisons) to teach inmates how to read. As the earliest prison reformers began to push for improvements in the operations of U.S. prisons, one of their first initiatives was to push for more education programs to give inmates the literacy skills seen as critical to success after release" (Seiter, 2010).
